Brain tumour- Acoustic Neuroma
Mr. H is a 46-year-old Chinese gentleman who is working in an IT firm. He presented with reduced hearing on the right side. An MRI showed intracanalicular acoustic neuroma. It's basically a non-cancerous tumor that grow in the ear.
Surgery would further damage his hearing and affect his balance as one of the important cranial nerves is running very close by.
A multidisciplinary team meeting was held and came to a conclusion to treat it with 1 fraction of radiosurgery using Gamma Knife.
Patient stayed for a night and completed his treatment in 40 minutes and was discharged well.
Gamma Knife radiosurgery is a painless computer-guided treatment that delivers highly focused radiation to tumors and lesions in the brain. Gamma Knife radiosurgery is used to treat brain tumors (benign and malignant), arteriovenous malformations, trigeminal neuralgia, acoustic neuroma and tremors.
