IMRT vs SBRT
Mr G is a 78 years old man who was diagnosed with Stage 2 moderate risk prostate cancer. He was offered radiotherapy to cure his cancer. He had the option of conventional fractionation (IMRT) of 20 times together with hormonal therapy vs stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) which takes only 5 times and no hormonal therapy.
It was a no brainer for him as he opted for less fractionation, no hormonal injection and cheaper than conventional fractionation.
Both IMRT and SBRT has similar benefits and toxicities. As shown in the isodose images, IMRT on the left has a larger dose distribution compared to SBRT on the right, which has a smaller dose distribution and more precise to the prostate.
